Easter Bunny Butt Cake

Okay so I know it’s no longer easter, so this easter cake recipe is a bit lost, but I made this very cute cake and I wanted to share it- because I actually liked this one a lot, not only was it all kinds of fun to make it but look at that cute little bum. For the first time since I started baking after college, I actually did something I was happy with- and that’s kinda a big deal. Before I went to college, I was a bit of a baker, I would do it nearly every weekend- terrible easy and silly cakes and buns but I loved it. When I got to collage I kinda thought that would be my path, baking and making things pretty. But it didn’t go to plan, now I’m trying to be promote self-positivity within myself so I’m not going to say what I did was bad, because it wasn’t- it was genially good, just not as good as I would have liked it to be, like I’ve said time and time again I like things to be perfect, look I’ve accepted I’m not going to be a perfect Victoria secret model myself, but I will die trying to make my cakes perfect, that’s something I can actually do. So my easter bum cake, its not perfect but its getting there slowly but surely and practise makes perfect doesn’t to practice I will!

A couple of years ago I made the classic bird nest cake that looked really cool and part of me was like- you know you can do that easy cake even better now and think how good it will look, but no I wanted something different, something cute. Im also not saying that this is a hard cake- because its not- yes I took a while (longer than I care to admit) making the feet but that’s because im slightly odd and ocd.

What I used:

  • 200g golden caster sugar
  • 200g unsalted butter, softened plus extra for the tins
  • 4 large eggs
  • 200g self-raising flour
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • For the Icing>
  • 100g milk chocolate
  • 200g butter
  • 400g icing sugar
  • 5 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • Fondant icing
  • Green food dye
  • Pink food dye
  • Wafer flowers

Start by making the cake, mix all the dry and wet ingredients together, until smooth and has no lumps. Pour evenly into 2 cake tins and put in the oven for 15-20 mins at 180 degrees (fan oven). Once the cake is in the oven make the butter cream for the centre of the cake, melt the chocolate and soften the butter. Mix them all together until smooth. And put in the fridge to harden. Now we move onto the super fun part the icing. This always looks so much easier than it is, I always takes me ages. Before things get messy with the food dye try and do the white things first, I made the bum first then the tail and then the feet, like I’ve said it takes a wile to do the feet but its all pretty self explanatory, you ball them up until smooth then slightly smidge it and cut the little toes, make the pads and paint them pink with the food dye and stick them on. Once you’ve made the bunny up, if it didn’t take over 15 mins take have a sit down for a few mins before taking your cake out, if you took longer do not forget about your cake. Take out the cake and let it cool, once it is completely cool put the butter cream in the middle and sandwich the cake together. Get a large bit of icing and role it out, remember to role it onto a icing sugared base or it will stick in places and look gross. Okay so role it not to thin not too thick but big enough to cover the cake, place it over the top of the cake and smooth it all over, clean up the edges and bam wham turkey and ham we are done, looking beautiful- ya I though so. Once its all on, use green food colouring with a bit of water to water it down a bit to paint over the cake, you don’t want this to be crazy green, just a lovely little green patch. Then using a little bowl and brush- I actually used a eyebrow brush (new don’t worry you can get brush sets from amazon for £4 with 100 brushes) and paint the little blades of grass around the outside, stick on the wafer flowers and then put the bunny bum on. Now for the mud I was going to use chocolate soil, which is really easy to make and looks great, you just need water caster sugar and melted chocolate, I however got distracted (shock I know…) and burnt my soil and didn’t have enough chocolate in my house to make anymore…although thinking of it someone could have given up there easter egg. But its okay because my step dad is a snack hoarder, he thinks he’s being clever by not letting my mum know he’s eating all the snacks, but she’s a woman, and she knows. Anyway he has an unlimited supply of KitKat, so if like me you burnt the soil grab a kit Kat mash it up and place it around the bum. Right so its finished now, so take 100 photos and then eat and enjoy.
